2010Girl is as Girl Does
Chicagoans see me as a girl, it seems.
I have yet to break out my girl clothes or makeup, I haven’t taken a razor to my face in almost a week, and yet I have been treated almost exclusively as female, whether in a restaurant, or trying on clothes in a department store, or on the street.
…and that suits me just fine!
Though I had no problem looking through the clothes in the women’s section of a certain department store, I really didn’t have the nerve to ask to be let into the women’s change rooms in my then state of appearance. But the sales clerk who came by offering assistance referred to me as ma’am, so I thought I’d give it a shot.
Obviously, people take a large part of their cue from the length of one’s hair, and the fact that my face is pretty much clear of any hair.
…that and the fact that I am trying on jewellery or skirts…
Seems that girl is as girl does.
As hard as it is to believe, it looks like if you behave as a girl, most people will assume you are one.
Thing is, I haven’t been trying to act female at all, and still, even in neutral contexts like restaurants I am still assumed to be female.
It has happened in front of my sister, which causes nothing more than a bit of teasing. It has happened in front of my GF, which is no problem. Not sure how comfy it’ll be when it happens in front of Mom or Dad or my buddies.
I’ll fall off that bridge when I get to it.
Meanwhile, I look at these episodes as an opportunity to make clear in front of those I might one day come out to that I am fine with being perceived as female. I am admitting nothing, but putting the concept into their consciousness nevertheless.
That said, today “stealth Janie” can take a break; the real thing is coming out to play.

That is damn adorable and I love the “Girl is as Girl Does” title…sounds a bit like Winnie the Pooh in its simplicity and cuteness. I wonder if that pooh bear ever wore a dress and beads or felt girlish but I don’t think so. I don’t remember seeing it in any of the stories but if not, he missed a ton of fun…and maybe even would have gotten more honey. Well, honey, I think that the “you” that is natural in these pics is a truly beeeautiful you! xxoo xxoo

Thanks for the honey-sweet comment, Andy! xo

Hi Janie. From your pictures, your inner girl really shines through. Sure the hair and activities help but the inner girl shines.
I’m surprised you’ve been able to “hide” her away in front of your “buddies”!

That’s an awfully sweet thing to say, Cyrsti. Of course, they’re not too bright, otherwise they wouldn’t be my buddies in the first place 😀 xo
