2012What I’m Talkin’ About!
I just love this video!
I think it’s a rotten ad for whatever they are trying to sell, but as a depiction of someone who can be either gender at the flip of a switch, it totally rocks my world!
You can see how the slightest change in posture and attitude of this transgender model turns what is obviously a beautiful woman into what is equally clearly a handsome man.
That’s the way I see it anyway. I’m sure others will say this model is either androgynous or both genders at once.
I disagree. But regardless of the paradigm, it looks to me to be a very positive depiction of the blurring line between the genders. It has to make some people sit up and take notice, perhaps open some minds as to what people can be like and how attractive it can be.
I know it will give censors fits – love that! Not unlike the kerfuffle over the cover of Dossier magazine (see Barnes and No Balls), which had a topless transgender model Andrej Pejic, who is technically male and, as far as I know, does not see himself as trans, on the cover.
Perhaps that is the motivation behind doing a commercial of this sort – the hope that some kind of controversy will ensue and provide gobs more free publicity.
If not, then I am left to wonder why a car company would produce such an ad – one that has nothing to do with their product and associates them with a controversial and marginalized group of society.
I love it, but I don’t get it.

Janie,
I think the point of the commercial is that “things may not be what they seem to be” and that this Voltswagen is not the car you expect. The part that puzzles me is wheither or not their audience will make the leap to find the car appealing since many might be turned off by the model not being what they expected/hoped for. My understanding is the VW is not running the ad in the States since they anticipate the reaction would have a fair number of negative votes.

She is incredibly attractive, with a wonderful figure…okay, an awesome figure….but I’m missing the “handsome man” part. Even when she is talking, to me it just sounds like a girl with throaty voice. Have I missed something??
BTW, her posture is fabulous! Love those shoulders…always a focus for me.
